HSA Visual Arts
The Home School Academy is a K-12 enrichment program in Academy District 20. The arts are a valuable tool for personal expression, learning about other cultures, and a key to creative problem solving. Students in the Arts Academy (Monday-Tuesday) and STEAM Academy (Wednesday - Friday) will have an opportunity to participate in Music and Visual art classes as part of their daily schedule.

New Artist Books for a New Year! |
It has been such a treat to have students back in the classroom. I love being able to make hands on art again! We started the year talking about portraits and proportions in drawing a face. Each student K-8 created a "realistic drawing" and then we used the mood meter (a chart to understand our emotions) to pick colors and paint it "abstractly." There are some truly unique and beautiful pieces.
I have chosen to hang all 400+ portraits in the hallway, laminating them so they can be wiped off. It has been so good to "see" everyone's face. They brighten up the halls! I will keep these up until Thanksgiving break then pass back to send home. Thanks for sharing your artists! Mrs Hust |
In response to all that is happening in the world, this school year I want to focus on safety, inclusion and empathy. This summer I applied for a Donors Choose grant to purchase culturally diverse artist books for my classroom. Amazingly it was fully funded in one week! This photo shows some of the books purchased with these funds.
When I studied my Masters of Modern Art History, I realized that the most famous artists mostly came from a privileged class background. My goal as a teacher is to provide balanced lessons and examples of artists that include both genders that come from a variety of different backgrounds, races, religions and cultures. I plan to base my art projects on these artists this year to fill the gaps in art history and provide examples for students that they may connect with or be inspired by.

Congratulations to our 2020 artists in the AAFCU district art show!
A special shout out to HSA student work displayed in the Air Force Academy Credit Union Art Show. This year's art show at the EAC was cut short due to Covid-19 school closures therefore I wanted to recognize some of student entries. Nathan M won a FIRST PLACE in the 4th grade for his wire Alexander Calder self portrait. Additionally Nathan was awarded the elementary "BEST OF SHOW" scholarship, selected as the top work submitted from over 24 elementary schools. HIGH FIVE Nathan - awesome Job! Cora J demonstrated exceptional skill in watercolor paint, mixing different shades of green and using a dry brush technique on her Henri Rousseau inspired Toucan painting. Lily B created a beautifully detailed Pagoda structure and decorative orizomegami background. I am so proud of all our artists - It is such a privilege to work with you!
Spring 2020 e-learning
With an unexpected spring, HSA continued learning online. I had such a great response from our lessons I wanted you to see some of our results. Thank you for all of you who participated in the found object color wheel, art history selfies and many projects. Your enthusiasm made e-learning fun, but I can't wait to see you again in-person this fall! Have a great summer!

Best of 2019-2020
Our year was cut short but I am so proud of all the learning and art that took place. I am so thankful for the time we had to draw, paint, play, print, bend, sculpt, felt, sew, fold, cut and design. I hope you enjoy some of the photos below!
