about Mrs. Hust
Welcome! I'm Mrs. Hust. This is my fifth year teaching ART at the Home School Academy and living in Colorado. Before that I spent most of my days in Michigan, teaching art, swimming in the Great Lakes and making pottery. I have also lived in other cool places like Kentucky, France and Uganda. In college I earned a double major in Art Education and French. I also have a Masters degree from Azusa Pacific University in Modern Art History, Theory and Criticism. I consider myself an educator and an artist. For my own work I create ceramics, printmaking, and handmade books. I love downhill skiing in the winter (Winter Park and A-Basin are my favorites) and am a life long swimmer (I practice with a US Masters Team at Pikes Peak Athletics). I have been married to my husband Andy for 18 years! We have two daughters who attend school in Academy District 20 and a Bernese mountain dog named Eloise.
The Art room at the Home School Academy is always a happening place. I love Project-Based-Learning and creating a warm environment where students feel safe to take creative risks. I try to infuse a little art history into every project we make and I am a big fan of interdisciplinary curriculum. I often design my own lessons/curriculum based on what students are learning in their classroom, past themes include Space, Human Body, electric circuits, POP art and London graffiti/street artists. I aim to create new projects every year so that students get exposure to as many mediums (paint, ink, printmaking, paper craft, clay, wool felting, crayon resist, fibers..) and artist/movements as possible. I think its important to have a strong foundation on the Art Elements (line, shape, space, value, form, texture and color) and Principles of Design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity).
This year I am teaching K-8 Academy of Arts (Monday and Tuesday) and K-8 STEAM programs (Wednesday and Thursday.) New for 2020-2021, I will be leading our High School Expeditions class each Friday. I am super excited to be in the community and working with our high school students.
I always welcome questions, stories or requests. I can be reached at [email protected] or curbside before and after school.
